With stewardship emphasis month behind us and “All Tithe Sunday” before us, I would like to go on record acknowledging that there are valid reasons for tithing that go beyond the mandates of the Bible. Once we determine that God has instructed us to return to Him His first-fruits (the top 10%), then that’s all the reason we need to be a faithful giver. There are more reasons, however. In addition to the verses given in the Bible, here are my reasons for tithing:

1. To honor God as the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

  • The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Psalm 24:1
  • Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s. Matthew 22:21

2. To show God I am thankful for the ability to work.

  • But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. Deuteronomy 8:18

3. To glorify God.

  • Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

4. To acknowledge my spiritual lineage and heritage.

  • And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Galatians 3:29
  • Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham. John 8:39

5. To demonstrate my love for God.

  • And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 1 John 2:3
  • If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15

6. To show my willingness to sacrifice.

  • And the king [David] said …. neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing…. 2 Samuel 24:24

7. To escape condemnation of robbing God.

  • Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Malachi 3:8
  • Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Malachi 3:9

8. To spread the gospel.

  • For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1 Corinthians 1:21
  • And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:15

9. To enjoy the blessings of God.

  • Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. Malachi 3:10

10. To consistently obey God.

  • Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

Stewardship is a solemn responsibility for every Christian. Beacon Baptist Church is our home church and our responsibilities begin here to support and sustain this local church.

More than this, however, I am to be focused on helping to start churches around the world, and my tithes and offerings help to do that. Giving is more than just giving money. May we be generous with our time and talents in seeking to glorify God through our lives.
