Genesis 12:10 – “And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.”

The way God works almost never makes sense to man. It defies logic. Proverbs 14:12 says, There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Man can use reasoning, sound thinking, logic, and even what might be referred to as common sense and not be in line with God. His ways are not our ways. Obedience to the Lord isn’t always easy. God allows difficulties in our lives to increase our faith in Him. Abram was in the midst of following God’s will and God allowed a famine to swallow up the land. What would you have done in this difficult and trying time? Interestingly, Abram did not pray. He did not consult God in the matter. He concluded that going “down into Egypt” was the only thing to do. Doing so brought terrible results and caused horrific consequences affecting other people. Needless to say, this decision did not bring about the outcome he expected. Why? Ignoring God never does. We think we have it all figured out. We have thought about it carefully. And, we arrive at the only obvious conclusion. We may even fool ourselves thinking we really have prayed about it…when in reality, we are simply leaning on our own understanding. True obedience to God defies logic. It asks God for His leading. It trusts the Lord when there seems to be no other way. It doesn’t rush ahead of God but calmly and patiently awaits God’s answer. As the book of Proverbs declares, man’s ways lead to death. In other words, we might think we have it all figured out, but anything that leads us to disobey God simply will not work. We are destined for failure. The successful life hinges on trusting and obeying the Lord in every matter.
