One of my “New Year’s Resolutions” two months ago was to try to go a full 30 days eating ZERO sugar of any kind from any drink or food or dessert and also to do a hundred sit-ups for that same thirty days. I’m still not sure if I made it a full thirty days with the sugar fast or not, but I know for a fact I never did thirty days of sit-ups, and not once did I ever even make it to 100 sit-ups in a day. HaHa! I typically had a difficult time even making it to fifty sit-ups. I had made a little progress weight-wise though. I started in January at 216.2lbs and had dropped down to 209.4lbs…when something happened…our church’s Marriage Retreat in Myrtle Beach, SC. Not a “bad thing” at all, quite the contrary, as my wife and I have never missed one since we got married back in June of 2004. We thoroughly enjoy attending each year and getting marriage helps, as we all need. What happened though was that after enjoying four wonderful big meals that weekend and then returning home to Raleigh, just two days later, my weight had gone  straight back up to 217.3lbs!?!?! I literally gained all the weight back that I had worked so hard trying to lose in a matter of less than forty-eight hours.

It can be very easy at times like this regardless of whatever circumstances or scenario you might be referring to whenever you try really hard to accomplish something, only to see your efforts brought to nought, to think to yourself, “What am I even trying? What’s the use? It’s just not even WORTH it!” This is EXACTLY what Satan wants us to think, right?! The devil HATES each and every one of us, hates that we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior (if we have), hates that we are trying to serve and follow our Lord, and HATES that we are trying to help our family, our children, and other people to do the same. He wants nothing more than for us to think this negative way and adopt this same pessimistic philosophy about the Christian walk as well…”What’s the use??? Satan isn’t EVER going to leave me alone! He’s never going to stop tempting me, trying to get me to fall into sin and fail as a Christian! The Christian walk is just TOO HARD and too much work and effort! IT’S JUST NOT WORTH IT!”

Galatians 6:9 says, “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Never let yourself get tired of doing good. Just because you might not see immediate results from your Christian walk, do not let the wicked one discourage you to altogether stop trying. IT IS WORTH IT! Your effort of fighting the devil’s daily temptations, Bible reading, Bible memorization, prayer, and ministry service DOES and WILL pay off in the end! Don’t let the devil win by giving in. The end of this story is simply that another five days later, my weight was right back down to 210.5lbs. During those short little blips of life, we can easily think that all our effort is not accomplishing a single thing and wonder why we should even try. Don’t give UP and don’t give IN to Satan’s discouraging thoughts. IT IS WORTH IT!

Psalms 31:24: “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.”

Philippians 1:6: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:”

Isaiah 41:10: “Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
