God works in mysterious ways! Heard that before? It’s in the Bible, right? You won’t find that exact phrase in the Bible. It’s a misquote of the words of a popular English hymn written by William Cowper in 1773. The actual quote was, “God moves in a mysterious way.”  The thought is probably drawn from the actual Old Testament quote of Isaiah 55: 8-9:

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Indeed the ways and the working of God are mysterious. This is never more true than when He is working in my life and yours. I have to admit that there have been many times in my life when God was allowing me to go through a difficult trial. My thoughts were, “What in the world is God accomplishing through this, and why me?” In fact, looking back on numerous difficult times I endured, I still have no real clue what God was doing. I do know this: What was strange to me was not strange to Him. He knew exactly what He was doing. And while I felt quite alone, He was right there with me all along.

Isaiah explains that God’s ways confound man…“For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.” (28:21)

Are you going through a difficulty? Is this a “strange” time for you? Take heart my friend. You may be perplexed, confused, and a bit dismayed. Take His hand as you travel this road and take comfort that you will emerge stronger and closer to the one that allowed you to go through the trial.

Life can be strange at times. Strange to us…but not to God. Rest assured. He knows what He’s doing.
